Two in a Row for Pennacchio
28 June 2010
NZB Select Sale graduate Pennacchio claimed her second consecutive black type win when she took out the Listed Centenary Classic Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
In a display of her excellent form, Pennacchio powered home for a convincing one and a half length victory over fellow New Zealand bred Firebolt (Stravinsky x Woodsong) from a field of 13 starters.
This performance comes hot on the heels of Pennacchio's first Listed win in the Spear Chief Handicap, also at Eagle Farm, on 5 June. In what was her second start in Australia, Pennacchio led home a New Zealand Bloodstock trifecta over 1500m.
Trained in New Zealand by Matamata based Andrew Scott, Pennacchio has now claimed her eighth win from only sixteen starts from 1200-1600m bringing her total earnings to $184,101. She now has a second black type win to add to her Group 3 placing gained earlier in the season in New Zealand.
Robbie Hewetson bought the filly at the 2006 Karaka Select Sale for $52,500. Owned by C J B Norwood and R N Preston Pennacchio commenced her racing career as a three-year-old and broke maiden ranks in only her third start with a strong two and a half length win at Te Aroha.
Bred by Highview Stud the five-year-old is the sixth individual stakes winner for Group 1 winning sire Align whose other stakes-winning progeny are Nightlign, Fully Fledged, Everswindell, Coup Align and Out of Align.
Pennacchio is the daughter of Abenezra, a double race-winning Rory's Jester mare. Abenezra produced a Pentire colt in 2009 which was purchased for $90,000 at the 2010 National Weanling Sale by Michael Wallace Bloodstock. The colt will be presented at the Karaka 2011 National Yearling Sale Series by Ardsley Stud.
Nominations are due 5 July for New Zealand Bloodstock's 2011 National Yearling Sales Series. For entry forms for Karaka 2011 (31 January - 7 February 2011) contact New Zealand Bloodstock on 09 298 0055 or email reception@nzb.co.nz.
