Unbeaten Nova Swiss Bursts into Karaka Million Contention
18 January 2016
Unbeaten Swiss Ace youngster Nova Swiss (NZ) booked his place in New Zealand’s richest race – Sunday’s Res. Listed $1m Karaka Million – winning the $20,000 Gartshore 2YO (1200m) at Tauranga on Saturday.

The Dean Wiles’ trained juvenile banked the $12,500 winner’s cheque, jumping him to 8th in the Karaka Million Order of Entry, with his trainer confirming that is where he will head.
“I’ve got the right type of horse to do it – he’s very laid back and nothing worries him at all,” Wiles said.
Nova Swiss was purchased for only $10,000 at the 2015 Karaka Select Sale and will be the least expensive horse in the Karaka Million field should he start.
Starting from barrier 3, Nova Swiss bounded out to lead for rider Samantha Collet. The pair dictated the pace until they were challenged from the turn by Feisty Jane (Snippetson). The Swiss Ace colt found a bit extra over the last 100 metres to win by half-a-length with Blue Twilight (NZ) (Sakhee’s Secret) in third place.
“He’s always showed a lot of ability and in his first trial he was just beaten by Manolo Blahniq, who is a $2.80 favourite for the Karaka Million,” added Wiles.
Nova Swiss was purchased for only $10,000 by NZB agent for his Singapore based owners Nova Racing Stable at the 2015 Karaka Select Sale.
Bred by G Perry, the son of Swiss Ace is out of Asciano Miss (Jet Spur), a half-sister to Group 3 Doomben Classic winner Pepperwood (Easy Rocking).
His full-brother Golden Sword (NZ) was purchased for $45,000 at the 2014 Karaka Select Sale. The Cliff Brown trained gelding is unbeaten in three starts in Singapore for his Gold Stable owners.
The Westbury Stud based Swiss Ace has 25 yearlings at the 2016 Karaka Yearling Sale Series, including a half-brother to Group 2 Yellowglen Stakes winner Fontelina (Testa Rossa) catalogued at Lot 247.
New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sales Series takes place on 25 January – 31 January. The Premier, Select and Festival catalogues are available online now or can be requested from www.reception@nzb.co.nz.
