Valuable Black-Type Win For Pendleton (NZ)
4 February 2018
Karaka weanling purchase Pendleton (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) picked up the fourth and most significant win of her short career to date in Saturday’s $50,000 Listed Fire & Mechanical Dunedin Gold Cup (2400m) at Wingatui.
Carrying the colours of prominent owner-breeder Kevin Hickman, the four-year-old made her black-type debut in the open handicap feature. Ridden by Samantha Collett for trainers Shane Kennedy and Anna Furlong, she scored a commanding victory by two and a quarter lengths.
Bought for $28,000 from Haunui Farm’s draft at the 2014 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, Pendleton has now had nine starts for four wins, two placings and $72,950 in prizemoney.
The Dunedin Gold Cup was a trifecta for Karaka graduates. Runner-up Aspen Lass (NZ) (Alamosa) cost $5,000 at the 2014 Select Sale and $25,000 at the Ready to Run Sale later that year. The third placegetter Who Dares Wins (NZ) (Iffraaj) was a $44,000 purchase at the 2014 Festival Sale.
