Warrior Double for NZB Ready to Run

17 June 2013

NZB’s Ready to Run Sale’s success continued last night with a winning double provided by All You Wish (NZ) who was successful in Hong Kong and Warrior (NZ) in Singapore, the latter being one of four NZ winners in Singapore last night.

The NZB Ready to Run Sale celebrated its third Group 1 victor of the season last week with Linton (Galileo) taking the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap and last night the Laurie Laxon trained Warrior (O’Reilly x Black Sugar) completed a winning double for the Sale when taking the second victory of his career.

Raced by owner Kevin Mcgrail, the five year-old returned to winning form for the champion New Zealand trainer with a narrow victory in the S$35,000 Kranji Stakes D over a mile. A graduate of the 2009 Ready to Run Sale, Warrior broke maiden ranks in October last year and brought up Laxon’s 32nd win of the season.

Debutant Got Luck (Danroad x Malika) opened the kiwis’ account at Kranji, with a brilliant debut win for trainer Alvin Tan and his owner the Eight Eight One Stable in the S$65,000 Initiation Stakes (1100m).

The three-year-old could not have been more impressive as he demolished his rivals last night, setting the pace and effortlessly racing clear in the straight where he was eased down 100 metres from home for an impressive three length win.

“That was a good win,” commented Tan who also trains the Karaka graduate Speedy Cat.

“I’m glad I’ve got another up-and-comer in my yard. I spotted him at the Breeze Ups in New Zealand and spent a bit of money for him after he won a trial.”

Kiwi trainer Mark Walker currently heads the Singapore Trainers’ Premiership by wins and brought up win number 38 for the season with Golden Sand Steed (Pins x Ambitious) in the S$65,000 Kranji Stakes C (1100m).

Taking his fourth win from his 12th start last night for his owner - the St Resources Stable - the three-year-old son of Pins made amends for his last start where he was beaten by a nose by the promising youngster Petrenui.

“He missed out very narrowly at his last run,” said Walker. “There was nothing in it, but anyway, we got it today.

“He was second-up from a break today and the freshness was probably gone, but he’s a good consistent sort who just keeps improving all the time.”

Karaka graduate Red Beard (Zenno Rob Roy x Sandalwood) was also successful at the meeting, taking his first win in over a year. The five-year-old was the early favourite for the Derby last season but a tough run in the race has meant that he has taken some time to return to form but he showed good progress with a 1.3 length win in the S$125,000 Kranji Stakes A (1400m) last night.

“I’ve had him for only two runs, but on his first-up fourth, we were expecting him to go well today, especially over a more suitable distance,” said trainer Shane Baertschiger.

“We’ll just take it easy with him now. The most important thing today was to see him back on track.”
