Group 1 Winners at Value Prices

Continuing to produce quality racehorses at affordable prices is New Zealand Bloodstock’s Select Sale which celebrated another successful season on the racetracks of Australasia.

There have been 27 Group 1 wins from graduates of the Select Sale over the past three seasons, including five Group 1 winners last season.
Flying the flag for the Select Sale is Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor), the winner of this season’s Group 1 Caulfield Cup following his victories in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby and Group 1 Australian Derby last season as a three-year-old.
Also tasting success as a three-year-old in Australia was Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) (Tavistock), winner of the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas. Rounding out the Group 1 winners were Dal Cielo (NZ) (Per Incanto), Platinum Witness (California Dane) and Shuka (NZ) (Bachelor Duke), all victorious at the highest level in New Zealand.
These five Group 1 winners cost a total of $360,000 as yearlings and have now earned over $3,600,000 in prizemoney, showing the value that can be found at the Sale.
This season, $45,000 Select Sale graduate Tarzino (NZ) (Tavistock) captured the Group 1 Victoria Derby. His Cambridge Stud based sire, Tavistock has the most yearlings entered in the Select Sale with 32, including:
- A colt out of twelve-race winner and stakes performed mare Pinzee (NZ) (Pins) catalogued at Lot 464.
- A colt out of Group 3 Curragh Matron Stakes winner Clerio (Soviet Star) catalogued at Lot 797.
- A filly out of Stavinsky mare Keep Smiling, a daughter of Group 1 winner Smiling Like, catalogued at Lot 949.
The Oaks Stud based Darci Brahma also has 32 yearlings catalogued over the three-day Sale, including:
- a filly out of Listed winner Princess Annaliese (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) catalogued at Lot 477.
- A full-sister to Listed Wanganui Stakes winner Dugan (NZ) catalogued at Lot 575.
- a full-brother to Listed Australian winner Cauthen (NZ) catalogued at Lot 1030.
Westbury Stud’s freshman stallion Reliable Man also has a large draft in the Sale 30 yearlings catalogued, including:
- A half-sister to Group 3 Taranaki 2YO Classic winner Artic Wolf (NZ) (Keeper) catalogued at Lot 489.
- A half-brother Group 3 Marton Metric Mile winner Old Belvedere (NZ) (O’Reilly) catalogued at Lot 769.
- A colt out of Listed Counties Bowl winner Fiorenza (NZ) (Stravinsky) catalogued at Lot 876.
All 10 of the New Zealand-based freshman sires are represented on the Select Sale, including New Zealand Horse of the Year Ocean Park with 18 yearlings including:
- A half-brother of Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes winner Russian Conquest (NZ) (St. Petersburg) catalogued at Lot 675.
- A colt out of Group 3 winner Howmuchyacharging (NZ) (Howbaddouwantit) catalogued at Lot 918.
With a Sale average of $46,813 at last year’s Sale, the Select Sale offers great value yet continues to produce Group 1 winners every season.
The Select Sale commences at 11am on the 27, 28 and 29 January.
