Star Relations at Karaka Premier Sale

A stellar crop of yearlings with an abundance of relatives to Group 1 winners has been catalogued for the Karaka Premier Sale, the showpiece of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sales Series.

Commencing on Monday 25 January, the two-day Sale has attracted 447 quality yearlings that includes siblings to three Group 1 winners from this season’s Melbourne Spring Carnival.
- A full-brother to Group 1 Melbourne Cup hero Prince of Penzance (NZ) (Pentire) is catalogued at Lot 45.
- A full-brother to Group 1 Victoria Derby victor Tarzino (NZ) (Tavistock) is catalogued at Lot 144.
- A half-brother by Magnus to Group 1 Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor) is catalouged at Lot 223.
This trio are among the 117 yearlings that are siblings to Group 1 winners in the Premier Sale. There are 31 siblings to Group 1 winners in the Sale including other notable siblings such as:
- A half-sister by Mastercraftsman to last season’s Group 1 Futurity Stakes winner Suavito (NZ) (Thorn Park) catalogued at Lot 28.
- A half-brother by Snitzel to Group 1 winning two-year-old of last season Marky Mark (NZ) (Makfi) catalogued at Lot 430.
- A full-sister to Shamexpress (NZ) (O’Reilly), winner of the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap and now sire, catalogued at Lot 133.
There are also 93 progeny of stakes winning mares in the Sale, with the offspring of 14 Group 1 winners including:
- A colt by O’Reilly out of Group 1 winning two-year-old Banchee (Oratorio) catalogued at Lot 189.
- A colt by Ocean Park out of dual Group 1 winner Glamour Puss (Tale of the Cat) catalogued at Lot 306.
- A colt by Pierro out of triple Group 1 winner Keep the Peace (Keeper) catalogued at Lot 345.
Kiwi and Karaka three-year-olds have an impressive record in Australia with a particular affinity with Group 1 Derbies, winning 45% of them in the past five seasons. Relations to Derby winners include:
- A full-brother to Group 1 Queensland Derby winner Brambles (NZ) (Savabeel) catalogued at Lot 22.
- A half-sister by Pour Moi to Group 1 Victoria Derby winner Monaco Consul (NZ) (High Chaparral) catalogued at Lot 177.
- A half-sister by Rip Van Winkle to another Group 1 Victoria Derby winner Lion Tamer (NZ) (Storming Home) catalogued at Lot 376.
Attracting the best sires from New Zealand and Australia, there are 64 of Australasia’s top sires represeneted along with the first yearling to be sold at auction in the Southern Hemisphere by the highest rated racehorse in the world ever, Frankel.
The colt by Frankel is catalogued at Lot 445 and is out of Zabeel mare Our Echezeaux, the dam of two stakes winners already and a full-sister to Group 1 winner Grand Echezeaux (NZ) (Zabeel), the dam of five-time Group 1 winner and successful sire Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill).
The Premier Sale has a proven record for producing Group 1 winners and last season was responsible for 14 individual Group 1 winners of 17 Group 1 races including First Seal (Fastnet Rock), Kermadec (Teofilo), Lucia Valentina (NZ) (Savebeel), Sacred Falls (NZ) (O’Reilly), Gust of Wind (NZ) (Darci Brahma) and more.
With more siblings to stakes winners and more progeny of stakes winners than last year’s Sale, the Premier Sale has attracted a catalogued not to be missed.
